The original design of the current base began in 1991, but it has been revised since then, and it is also now flat. While there has not been a general reissue since 1991, Idaho has imposed a mandatory 7 year rolling replacement, so none of the original embossed plates of this design are still in use. Flat plates came into use in early 2008.
County system. Larger counties are on letter series. Flat plates are now appearing in regular passenger series. Registration characters on the new flat plates are now black instead of the original blue used on embossed plates.
